70% of malicious software is linked to cybercrime

A study by security firm Panda Software says that 70% of malicious software (viruses, trojans, spyware) is linked to several types of cybercrime. “Financial profit has become a priority” for the creators of these bugs as opposed to gaining attention.

Another interesting result of the study is that email worms are being abandoned for more discreet malicious behavior. The bad guys are building software to listen for bank numbers, passwords, and other things that could have potential financial gains.

The moral of the story is that you and I must keep that virus scanner up-to-date, or we may lose more than data.
