Sony’s Punishment - $7.50 per CD

Remember that Sony copy protection rootkit snafus a while ago? Well, there is a settlement now.

For the customers who went through all of the trouble of trying use the ‘copyprotected’ cds, they will get $7.50 and a free download per cd, or three freesong downloads per cd. Sony will also have to provide a tool for safe removal of the rootkit.

The free songs will be from iTunes and other,yet to be named services.

$7.50 or three songs does not seem appropriate, a heavier punishment should be levied against Sony as a warning that companies should not install rootkits and programs as a means of copy protection. Removing the rootkit caused much grief and worry for those involved.

BUT with much of the music today, three songs is all you would want from many of these bands.
