US Goverment Worried That Lenovo PCs may be bugged
I’m a little late bringing this story up, but I think it’s pretty interesting.
The claim that the US State Department is making is that China could be using Lenovo PCs to spy on classified work on sensitive government PCs.
I personally don’t believe it to be true as Lenovo computers are mostly assembled in North Carolina and such data traffic back to China would have been detected by someone. Plus, Lenovo is a private company that China’s government has a 28% stake in, IBM has a 18% stake, while the rest is owned by investors around the globe.
But if Lenovo computers are really reporting data back to China, it is likely that we have been spied upon in a similar matter for many years - most if not all computers have some data mechanism made outside the US. It is fascinating with all of this talk about spyware, that something could be happening at such a low level, below the software - in the hardware.
