Disable Messenger Service

Current Location: PC Self Help / Windows Tips / Customization / Disable Messenger Service

Messenger (not related to MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger) is a Windows service that transmits text messages across a network. Sometimes messages can be sent from other computers outside the network and that can get annoying quickly.

If you're not on a business network, you can probably disable Messenger without any trouble.

  1. Go to the Start Menu, click Control Panel
  2. Click on Administrative Tools
  3. Double-click Services
  4. Find Messenger, highlight it and then right click. Select Properties.
  5. Click the button labeled Stop
  6. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type.
  7. Click OK
