Display File Extensions

Current Location: PC Self Help / Windows Tips / Explorer / Display File Extensions

There are many viruses and other bugs circulating around the Internet that seem harmless and pose as .jpg or the .doc files, when in reality they can be .exe and .vbs files. Their goal is to get you to click on these files and let them reek all havoc on your computer. By default Windows XP hides the second extension, leaving you in the dark into what the true purpose of the file is. Luckily, the fix for this is quite easy to implement and involves the changing of just one setting.

1. Open Windows Explorer or My Computer
2. Go to the Tools menu and then select Folder Options.
3. Click the Options tab and then uncheck the check box beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
