Faster Start Menu

Current Location: PC Self Help / Windows Tips / Registry Hacks / Faster Start Menu

For some reason Windows XP defaults to delaying display of the Start Menu when you hover over the "All Programs" with the new Start menu.

This annoyance can be remedied with a quick edit of the registry.

Before you edit the registry, you may want to read our detailed overview of editing the registry.

Okay.

Go to the Start Menu, click Run, and then type in Regedit.exe, press Enter.

Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Modify or create the value data type and value name as follows:

Data Type: String Value
Value Name: MenuShowDelay

Set that string to your preference. 400 is the default. Setting MenuShowDelay to 0 removes the delay.

Exit Regedit and reboot.
